...gasp...

Yesterday I suffered a bout of hyperventilation. I think it is hyperventilation. I experienced it once while I was about 9 years old; there was a tightening of chest accompanied by numbness, a sudden big gasping for breaths, but it went away after about 5 minutes.

Yesterday night, it was different. Maybe I am an adult so it's different? Yesterday it was more serious. I was talking halfway and suddenly I went "heeeerrrrrrrrrrrr"......followed by "heeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr"....again. BOy, my mind was wondering....what's this?... but I had no time. The next thing I knew, I was bending over my sink trying to breathe or catch any air I could get. I can't control my breathing and the numbness over my entire chest was severe. My face was getting the needles. Don't know about the rest of my head. Couldn't think so much then. My hands were numbed and so were my knees... I could still stand but bending, and I can't feel anything from my hands... I don't even dare to move.

Boy, I think it went on for 20 minutes or so, the numbness, the tightness. My tears kept falling uncontrollably. Finally the breathing was more bearable but the numbness in the stomach continues.

I don't know why it started and why I was having this. I don't think it's asthma. Any ideas what it was? Was I too agitated or stressed?

Hey QB,

Hope you are feeling better now.

I think one of our blogmates - Maya Cassis - is a doctor, and perhaps she would be able to tell you something about this condition. I am not really sure, but it would be worth a try.

I am writing to her now, requesting her to have a look at your post.

PS: FYI, her blog - http://mayacassis.blogspot.com

Cheers!

QB, I seriously think you need to see your PCP and maybe get a referral to a cardiologist or a pulmonologist for some tests.

It could have just been an episode of hyperventilation but you should have it checked out. Especially with the tingling and numbing.

Take care of yourself QB. and let us know how you are....

hey girl,got a concerned post from my buddy pradeep and he was worried about you.
what you have described sounds like a panic attack which occurs usually when someone is thoroughly agitated but the fact that it went for quite a while makes me a bit concerned....did u feel palpitations...heart beating in and out of your chest like mad,head reeling etc....
you should go to the nearest health care centre and get your CBC(complete blood count) and be seen by a physician who can look into the details as such attacks should not be pushed aside casually when you feel a bit better....given some history at an earlier age...it may be connected or not at all...but a check up won't hurt and it will put your mind to ease.
also learn some pranayama or breathing techniques...incase it was exaggerated due to some underlying cause related with breathing or stress.
hope you are feeling better.do take care.
ps -please notify the nearest friend or emergency centre if such a thing repeats again.

Hi! Thanks so much for refering Maya Cassis to me. I am much better now. Just that it has been a mad rush this week on my new job ;) Hope I can get some rest this weekend.

@Yashita, Curious & Kimmy:
Thanks so much, gals :) Am much better already. Will do a checkup this Saturday :)

@Maya Cassis:
Hi! Thanks so much for assessing the symtoms for me. I didn't feel quickening of heartbeats, or sweating. But you are right, I was very agitated before it started. Guess I was pushed over the limit... I am planning to see the doctor this saturday for an assessment, in case it happens again.

Thank you so much again :)

Oh girl!good to know that you are feeling much better.these things are a part of life.change and stress are a bit difficult to deal with.it's the same for everyone.don't worry at all.just give yourself time to adjust to the pressures and very soon you will be gliding through.
just eat fruits,fresh veggies( pure black grape juice is a very high energy drink) ...have it daily.It will pep you up.

Hi gal! You need to take care too. *HUG** :)

@Ekta:
Thanks, Ekta :)

@Maya Cassis:
Thanks for the great tip on black grape juice! So tired lately. Have been refraining myself from being pushed too much and becoming agitated as a result. Have been closing my eyes and counting to ten whenever that happens...
