Get your kid to say Goodbye to their Materialistic Streak
Today I watched an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" which had Maria Shriver and her mom, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, as guests.
At one point, Maria mention how her parents never get excited about materials/objects, but they were able to get their children to be excited about ideas. I thought that was a really great pointer, particularly in this materialistic world. How do parents veer their children away from a materialistic mindset onto something far more meaningful in life.

Good post.
The only way the parents can teach values to their children is by personally modeling those values.
Being excited about ideas, being open to new ones, being ready to think and question, being willing to express ideas, to discuss... Those are signs of maturity.
Mature parents can certainly influence their children to be mature.
Maria Shriver seems to have been truly fortunate.

Kids are materialistic....mine are I know that...especially my son. He's this way now cause his friends are this way......peer pressure.
its almost impossible in todays world.....i think it has to drilled from a very early age....

I aree with kimmy...No matter how much parents instil the true value of real life..materialism creeps in thru friends...Quiet hard in today's world!

The role of parents are so important. They will be amazed how much their role-modelling affects their children, and even other's children around them.
Children are very impressionable. It's easy to change for the worse but never so simple to be firm for the better :) Parents, be firm!

That's why it's not easy to be raising a child. I am really thankful to my parents for all their efforts and hard work ;)

My friend has planted her family more actively in church these days. I must say that prayers work for her kid. Nowsday he is more sensible, though still temperamental sometimes. My friend is working on her husband to help play a supporting disciplinary role too. A supportive family is important.
